Pop. Puff. Nothing. The oven in the hollow has gone cold as a river stone, and the whole forest is outside Poppy the mouse's round green door wanting breakfast. Hazel the squirrel talks fast and says build a fire, in here, right now (it's in the flour, it's in the honey, it's in Poppy's whiskers; noted). Bramble the hedgehog is slow and says eat the dough raw (it tastes like a puddle that has given up). Then Poppy sits down on her acorn stool and notices that Bramble is hot right through his prickles, and he hasn't been near a fire all morning. One pause: your child works out what's been heating the big flat stone in the clearing, and says it at the same moment Poppy does. Then everyone lines up, paw to paw, and chants the loaves across the moss. Ends with the old oven relighting itself, too late. They're stone bakers now.
