The Lost Lighthouse Adventure

Splutter. Hiss. Dark. The lighthouse lamp dies on the foggiest night of the year, with boats still out, and the spare oil is right across the village. Wren and her Uncle Barnaby can't see a thing, so they go by sound and smell: the harbor bell on their left, the baker's bread up ahead, a seal snoring in the boat shed doorway. They relight the lamp and two boats come home. Sam's rowboat can't see the beam at all, and it's Wren who works out why, and what to do about it. Your child stands still, listens, and sniffs alongside her.

What's inside

  • The lighthouse lamp goes out in fog so thick nobody can see the sea, and Wren and her Uncle Barnaby have to cross the village for the spare oil by ear and by nose.

  • Meets a seal asleep in the boat shed doorway, a baker who works all night, and Sam, out in a rowboat with no lamp.

  • Three built-in pauses: your child names the sound in the fog, sniffs out the way, then counts the fog bell's three rings with Wren.
