Ages 5–9 StoryThe Dragon of Marble Mountain
"That's not a roar." Every night a long, low sound rolls down Marble Mountain over the roofs of Thistledown, and Juni's grandmother says it's the dragon, fierce, and stay off that mountain. Juni says he sounds sad. She packs bread and a blanket and climbs, past the pines, past the waterfall, up the loose gray stones where the wind whistles, and somewhere in that whistle there's a tiny ting she nearly misses. In the cave is a dragon with eyes like lamps, wet, who has lost the silver bell his mother gave him the day he hatched. He has lifted every boulder and blown every leaf off the mountain. Everything he has is too big. Juni tries the one thing nobody has: stop, and listen. Two pauses: your child judges whether the sound is fierce or sad, and listens for the bell under the wind. Ends with the grandmother inviting him for Sunday supper, tail outside.

What's inside
A nightly sound off Marble Mountain that the whole village calls a roar, and Juni, who hears a sigh, climbs up to find a dragon who has lost his mother's silver bell.
Meets a dragon who is enormous and apologetic, has moved boulders and blown every leaf off the mountain looking, and a grandmother who is brisk, wrong, and funny.
Two built-in pauses: your child decides if the sound is fierce or sad, then goes still and listens for a tiny ting under the wind. The clue is planted on the way up, so a sharp listener catches it first.
