"I have changed my mind." High in the tallest pine, a small gray owl called Pip has decided tomorrow is a much better night for flying. Her mama sits beside her and asks what she plans to do about the ground. Pip tries walking down backwards like a squirrel (skid, skid, skid). She tries waiting for the wind (her wings clap shut). Then she spots a moth over the warm rocks that has stopped flapping and is still going up, and works out something her mama never knew: she doesn't have to fly up. She has to fall into it. One breath in, one breath out, and whoosh. Two pauses put the breath in your child's chest. Ends tucked under a wing, close to a whisper. A bedtime read, not a pep talk.
